Join us on Friday 15 May from 3.00pm for a bakealong session with Christine, and bring a little sweetness to your lockdown! After a break from the NHS to raise her family, Christine began her baking business, Peboryon (the Cornish word for ‘baker’). Christine is a 1992 MES leaver.
Christine never intended to be a baker, however her Home Economics lessons in the basement of Ravelston House, and her love of a great party gave her confidence to start the ball rolling! Her business has taken her to making custom cakes for Royalty, charities and celebrities, and even a couple of international deliveries.Christine and Phil starred in all four seasons of Channel 4’s Extreme Cake Makers, have had their studio featured by Julie Walters on her Coastal Railways series, been interviewed on the One Show in the run up to the Royal Wedding and competed in a marathon Food Network team baking competition.
With her amazingly supportive and talented husband, Christine has built a business from a home baking enterprise into an internationally-regarded boutique business. You may remember seeing an amazing cake at the Tattoo in summer 2018 when Christine made a fantastic banana and peanut butter cake (pictured) to celebrate our connections with Malawi at a rather special Tattoo year, with girls coming from the school in Malawi to perform alongside Mary Erskine girls for the month long extravaganza.
Though the lockdown may have meant Christine & Phil’s client’s parties have all been postponed, they’re still busy designing and planning for some lovely weddings to come. They’ve also been supporting other custom cake businesses across the country through The Cake Professionals (a national endeavour they began in 2018 to help independent cake businesses thrive). Christine & Phil have also squeezed in some writing for cake magazines, demonstrating for an international online cake-a-thon and developing new flavours in the kitchen for when lockdown finally lifts.
They’ll be bringing Lemon Sponge with an Elderflower curd and Elderflower Buttercream, one of their classic flavours to our screens via Zoom. You are welcome to bake the same cake as Christine in real time or you can simply watch and learn but whatever your decision I am sure the afternoon will prove to be really enjoyable. A list of ingredients will be shared later this week, in good time for them to be purchased during your weekly shop so there will be no excuse for not having a go!
Some of you may be interested in Peboryon’s new initiative too – Black Box Cakes! This initiative will allow you to order slices of the cakes which are normally only available to private clients to be posted to your door. If you would like to know more about this initiative, you can sign up for their mailing list here: https://mailchi.mp/ce8c945cec37/blackboxcake.
